Mathematics at Hiram College Mathematics Programs:
Majors & Minors


The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to provide a challenging and rigorous undergraduate education in mathematics in order to prepare students for graduate work and for careers in teaching and industry. This goal is accomplished by offering each student a demanding set of course requirements and by extensive mentoring by faculty on academic topics, careers, and graduate education.

The Department offers both a major and a minor in mathematics.  The mathematics program is designed to prepare students for positions in business and industry, for graduate work in mathematics, statistics, and operations research, and for secondary school teaching.

Mathematics Major 
The mathematics major requires the completion of Mathematics
198, 199, 200; 217, 218; 308, 371, 461; at least one of 309, 372, 462; at least two Mathematics electives numbered above 200; the Junior Seminar 380; the Senior Seminar 480; a correlative experience chosen in consultation with an adviser in the mathematics department; and a Mathematics Portfolio. Exceptions to these requirements will be considered upon request.  

Mathematics Minor
The mathematics minor requires the completion of Mathematics
198, 199, and at least five mathematics electives numbered above 199. At least three of the electives must be numbered above 300.  Exceptions to these requirements will be considered upon request.
