Mathematics at Hiram College The Mathematics Correlative Experience

The correlative experience is intended to emphasize the applications of mathematics and its connectedness to other disciplines.  For this reason, the experience must involve significant mathematical usage but must take place outside the Mathematics Department's course offerings.  The correlative experience can take a variety of forms and can be tailored to meet the goals of the individual student.  Examples of ways in which a student can meet the goals of the required correlative experience are listed below.  However, students are encouraged to be creative and, with the advice of a member of the Mathematics Department, craft an experience that is meaningful to the individual.

  • The Mathematical Contest in Modeling
Two years' participation in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, together with team presentations of solutions

  • An Approved Summer Research Experience

  • Approved Coursework (one course)
The following courses already have been approved.  Students are encouraged to suggest to the Mathematics Department other courses that may also meet the goals of the correlative experience.
         BIOL 365 or 415
         CHEM 330 or 350
         CPSC 172

    MGMT 313

    PHIL 121, 212, or 265
         PHYS 213
         SOAN 251

  • An Approved Internship
