Each of the modern foreign languages offers its majors and other students interested in foreign languages the opportunity to study in an appropriate country. These programs are offered on a rotating basis. The French and Spanish programs are currently centered in Montpillier/Rennes and Segovia, respectively. Students are taught by Hiram faculty, live with native-speaking host families, and visit places of literary, historic, and cultural importance. The German program, located in Hamburg and Berlin, is taught by three professors representing language, literature, and science. Participants are housed in an international conference center in Hamburg.
Students wishing to study abroad in a year when the desired language is not being offered may spend a semester or a year at one of the centers of the Institute of European Studies. This organization might appeal particularly to students who plan to study economics, history, or political science in another language since Hiram's programs concentrate on language, civilization and literature.
