

Requirements for Majors
A major in Spanish requires a minimum of nine courses beyond Spanish 103, and should include two civilization courses, phonetics, advanced grammar, and at least three upper-level reading courses. All majors are required to study Spanish abroad on a program approved by the Spanish Department. Majors should plan their sequence of courses with the Spanish Department faculty.
Courses
101 Beginning Spanish I (4 hours)
An introduction to Spanish. Development of four basic skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking. Introduction to grammar. Course taught in Spanish. Complementary laboratory drill sessions.
102 Beginning Spanish II (4 hours)
A continuation of Spanish 101. Prerequisite: 101 or equivalent (placement).
103 Intermediate Spanish I (4 hours)
A continuation of Spanish 102. Quick grammar review. Conversation and composition labs. Prerequisite: Spanish 102 or equivalent (placement).
104 Intermediate Spanish II (4 hours)
A continuation of Spanish 103. First course counted toward a Spanish major or minor. Continuing study of grammatical and idiomatic difficulties. Emphasis on vocabulary building through reading and discussion. Prerequisite: Spanish 103 or equivalent (placement).
113 Intensive Intermediate Spanish I (3 hours)
Like Spanish 103, a continuation of 102 but this is taught in the three week term and is much faster paced. Thorough but rapid grammar and vocabulary review. Conversation and composition labs. Prerequisite: Spanish 102 with a B average or better or equivalent (placement).
200 Advanced Reading and Introduction to Criticism (3 hours)
An introduction to extensive reading in contemporary Spanish: vocabulary building, idiomatic usage, development of rapid comprehension, and critical analysis. Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or equivalent (placement).
201 Conversation and Composition (4 hours)
An intensive course in oral and written practice. Systematic acquisition of vocabulary and study of syntax with emphasis on building fluency in spoken and written work. Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or equivalent (placement).
202 Conversation and Composition On Site Abroad (3 hours)
Offered only abroad in the three week term, this course is a systematic approach to learning the contemporary language of the host company. Daily contact with native speakers, newspapers, and magazine readings, daily journal entries and compositions afford the student an intensive practice in communicating. Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or equivalent.
203 Conversation and Composition On Site Abroad (4 hours)
Offered only abroad in the twelve week term, this class is a systematic approach to learning the contemporary language of the host company. Daily contact with native speakers, newspaper, and magazine readings, daily journal entries and compositions afford the student practice in communicating. Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or equivalent.
211 Phonetics (3 hours)
Theory of Spanish phonetics: symbols, transcription, interpretation. Intensive pronunciation practice and student-taped exercises. A performance component will be included. This course is vital for prospective teachers of Spanish and of interest to all students desiring to correct their pronunciation. Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or equivalent.
230 Translation I (4 hours)
Translation of a variety of texts from Spanish into English, to foster understanding of the language and to develop awareness of translation pitfalls. Emphasis on comparative grammar and linguistics. Prerequisite: Spanish 200 or equivalent.
250 Peninsular Spanish Civilization (4 hours)
Cultural highlights from prehistoric times to the present day. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
251 Spanish American Civilization (4 hours)
Cultural highlights from pre-Columbian times to the present day. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.

301 Pre-Golden Age Spanish Literature (4 hours)
Medieval and early Renaissance texts, from the Jarchas to the Celestina. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
302 The Quixote (4 hours)
Cervantes' classic novel, Part I and selections from Part II. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
303 Golden Age Theatre (4 hours)
Tirso, Alarcon, Lope, Calderon. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
304 Golden Age Poetry (4 hours)
Romances, Gongora, Quevedo, Garcilaso, Herrera, Cervantes, Lope de Vega and the mystics: Sta Teresa, Fray Luis de Leon, San Juan de la Cruz. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
305 Golden Age Prose (4 hours)
Cervantes (but not the Quixote), Quevedo, Gracian, Aleman, Zayas, and the chroniclers of the Discovery. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
306 19th Century Peninsular Literature (4 hours)
From Romanticism through Costumbrism and Realism to the Generation of '98. Prerequisite: Spanish 200
307 20th Century Peninsular Spanish Drama (4 hours)
From Lorca to Diosdado, including Casona, Buero, Sastre and Delibes. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
308 20th Century Peninsular Spanish Fiction (4 hours)
Tremendismo: its precursors and its aftermath. Cela, Laforet, Matute, Aldecoa, Quiroga, Medio, Goytisolo, Castillo Puche and others. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
309 20th Century Peninsular Spanish Poetry (4 hours)
The Precursors of the Generation of '27 and thereafter: Unamuno, Jimenez, Machado, Lorca, Guillen, Salinas, Otero, Aleixandre, Alberti. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
310 Survey of Spanish American Literature through the 19th Century (4 hours)
From Sor Juana de la Cruz to Ruben Dario. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
311 Spanish American Novel (4 hours)
The history of the novel in Spanish America and analysis of selected 20th century novels. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
312 Spanish American Short Story (4 hours)
Masters of the short story from Lugones to Garcia Marquez. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
313 Spanish American Poetry (4 hours)
Spanish American poets, from Dario to the present. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
314 Spanish American Drama (3 hours)
Dramatists from Sanchez to the present. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
315 Spanish American Nobel Prize Winners (3 hours)
From Gabriela Mistral to Garcia Marquez. Prerequisite: Spanish 200.
316 Latin American Film (4 hours)
Classic Latin American films. Prerequisite: Spanish 200 or 211.
317 Spanish Film (4 hours)
Classic Spanish films from Bunuel to Almodovar and beyond. Prerequisite: Spanish 200 or 211.
330 Translation II (4 hours)
Translation of a wide variety of texts from English into Spanish, to deepen understanding of the language and to develop awareness of linguistic nuances. Strong emphasis on correctness and grammar, and on vocabulary building. Prerequisite: Spanish 230.
380 Seminar (3-4 hours)
The study in depth of one author or one theme or to trace a literary movement or genre. Prerequisite: 300 level course work and permission.
