REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPARTMENTAL HONORS IN ENGLISH
HIRAM COLLEGE
It is our philosophy that honors students are capable of important careers
in literature and/or writing. We will work closely with honors candidates
to help them gather a better sense of what professional careers in English
or writing might ask, and to move them towards to a professional level of
work.
Hiram College requirements for Departmental Honors:
1) An overall grade-point average of at least 2.8
2) A departmental grade-point average of at least 3.6
All English Department courses (those with a prefix of ENGL or WRIT) will be
counted towards students' departmental GPAs in determining Departmental Honors
candidacy.
3) A sum of overall GPA and departmental GPA of 6.8.
To be a candidate for honors in English, a student must satisfy the
following requirements in addition to the college requirements for honors:
- Work with a faculty member to revise either an analytical essay written in a 400-level seminar classes or (for majors in English with a Creative Writing Emphasis) a significant piece of creative writing composed in a 300-level writing course;
- Present copies of the revised work to members of the English department several days before the oral presentation (see 4, below);
- Submit the revised work to an undergraduate journal or literary review after receiving feedback from department members;
- Deliver a 10-minute oral presentation of the revised work.
