PAYING FOR THE MEAL PLAN
The cost of the meal plan at Hiram College is a part of each student’s total financial package and becomes a component of the student’s account balance. Students/their guardians will receive account statements and payment requests from the Hiram College Business Office at regular intervals.
THE EXPRESS CARD
The Hiram Express Card is the Hiram College universal student ID and will be used during all four years a student is on campus. This ID gives students access to the following accounts coordinated through dining services:
- Meal Plan & Board Allowance
- Dining Account
- Miscellaneous Account
- Book Voucher
The card must be presented at all meals. The ID card also gives students access to on-campus amenities including library services, the media center, and the recreation and athletic facility.
Photos for the ID card are taken during Hiram’s new student orientation program for first year students. The card is then distributed to first years when they arrive on campus for fall classes.
Students who lose their ID cards may obtain a temporary card from the Dining Services Office located on the first floor of the Kennedy Center. If after a week the student has not located the original Express Card, a new card may be purchased for $15.
ACCOUNT OPTIONS
The Meal Plan & Board Allowance
All residential Hiram College students are required to purchase a meal plan.
Two separate components comprise meal plans at Hiram: meals in Hiram's Miller Dining Room and an alloted board allowance. Meals in Hiram’s Dining Room are all-you-can-eat and provide students with a variety of food choices. The Dining Room remains open all day with continuous service. The board allowance is a cash amount that students can use to purchase food items from the K.C. Cafe, located in the Kennedy Center. The board allowance is transferred to a student’s account twice per semester at seven-week intervals. Any board allowance not used in a seven-week cycle will be carried over to the next cycle. At the end of the academic year, any unused board allowance will be lost.
As part of Hiram’s meal plans, every student receives eight free guest meals per semester which can be used in the college’s dining room. When bringing a guest to meals, students need only inform the Dining Room greeter who will then swipe the student’s ID card under a special guest code.
Please note: during official school breaks, meal plans and board allowance are unvailable to students
The Dining Account
The dining account is an account in addition to the meal plan/board allowance which can be used in any of the College’s dining venues. Students apply cash to this account and gain an additional 15% purchasing power in Hiram’s dining service operations. For example, if a student applies $100 to this account, the student’s account will be credited $115. The dining account is accessible during official school breaks.
The Miscellaneous Account
The miscellaneous account is a pre-paid account that is similar to the dining account. Monies applied to this account can be used in any of Hiram’s dining service venues, as well as the Hiram College Bookstore and copy machines located in the Kennedy Center and Hinsdale Hall. The miscellaneous account is accessible during official school breaks.
The Book Voucher
Hiram’s book voucher is a pre-paid account that can only be used in the Hiram College Bookstore.
ACTIVATING AND ACCESSING DINING ACCOUNTS
Students may activate a dining services account, miscellaneous account, and book voucher by depositing a minimum of $25.00 per account with the cashier in the Hiram College business office. The business office is located in the Student Services Suite on the first floor of Teachout-Price Hall.
Students identify from which account they want a item deducted by telling the sales clerk at the point of purchase. At the conclusion of the sale, the student will be given an updated account balance.
At the end of an academic year, any balance remaining on the dining account, miscellaneous account, and book voucher will rollover to the next year. If any of these accounts exceeds $10 at the time of graduation or early withdrawal from the College, a full refund will be issued.
SPECIAL NEEDS
While the regular menu cycle in Hiram’s Dining Room offers extensive selections and a wide variety of choices at each meal, some students have special dietary needs. If an individual’s needs cannot be met through Hiram’s regular menu options, the student should come to the Dining Services Office (located in the Kennedy Center) between the hours of 8:30a.m. and 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday to discuss a solution. Special dietary requests should be approved by a personal physician.
STONE SOUP FOOD CO-OP
Students who would prefer a dining option independent of Hiram’s traditional meal plan can join the Stone Soup Cooperative. This student-run cooperative serves vegetarian and vegan meal. Members of the cooperative are responsible for the entire operation, including food preparation, serving the meals, clean-up, and managing the supply budget. Many of the ingredients for the meals are organic and are purchased from regional markets. The Stone Soup kitchen is located in Fenton Hall and members have 24 hour access to the facility. Lunch and dinner is served daily. Membership is capped at 60 students. Interested parties may inquire about membership by calling the co-op at 330-569-5184.
