As society grows more complex, it increasingly depends on people with effective communication skills. At Hiram, the Department of Communication offers a comprehensive examination of the communication process.
Communication Major
The Department of Communication offers a major requiring nine courses with a correlative in writing (two courses) or a foreign language (through the 103 level). The following core courses are required: Communication 101, 300, 470, 480. Courses are offered in four tracks: Relational Communication, Rhetorical Communication, Mediated Communication, and Intercultural Communication. Students elect five courses from three tracks to complete their major. The correlate writing courses must be course work above the First Year Seminar Level. Foreign language correlative is completed by competency
or course enrollment through the 103 level. Students are also encouraged to complete an internship during their Junior or Senior year.
Communication Minor
A minor in Communication requires five courses, including Communication 101 and 300; three courses are selected from two different tracks. These courses, chosen in consultation with a Communications Department faculty member, should represent a coherent study of communication relative and complementary to the student's major.
Other Options
Students are also encouraged to have an internship experience, preferably during their Junior or Senior year. Other opportunities include field experience, independent studies, and service learning.
