THE J.J. TURNER SOCIETY

The J.J. Turner Society is named in honor of J. Jesse Turner, Professor of Biology, 1904-1950. A painstaking and thorough biologist, a versatile teacher with great love for his students, Professor Turner helped establish the national reputation of Hiram College for excellence in the sciences. Membership in the Turner Society is granted to all graduates of Hiram College who majored or minored in biology, biochemistry, biomedical humanities, or neuroscience (formerly psychobiology) or to graduates who have gone on to advanced study and/or careers in the biological sciences and medicine.

19th Annual meeting and Induction: March 23, 2007

This year Prudence J. Hall, Ph.D. will be recognized with the J.J. Turner Award.

Dr. Hall will present a talk titled “A Fortunate Life: 40-Plus Years as a Biologist”.

Dr. Hall is Professor Emerita of Biology and Chemistry at Hiram College.  Dr. Hall arrived in Hiram in the fall of 1988 as an assistant professor of biology and quickly established herself as an important and integral member of both the department and the college.  She was tenured and promoted to associate professor in 1994, the year in which she assumed new duties as Hiram's first biochemist, with joint appointments in Biology and Chemistry.  Dr. Hall shepherded the program to become a new major, and for this and other work was elevated to full professor in 2000.  Besides this cross-disciplinary work, Dr. hall has collaborations with researchers and teachers from Hiram to Australia cutting across several disciplinary lines.  Her research and teaching accomplishments are many and varied and range from field to laboratory, classroom to study abroad, and functional biochemistry in the rhizosphere to field biology in Australia.  She has taught and mentored hundreds of Hiram students, and has been honored in several ways including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship from the Australian National University in 1988-1989, and the Paul E. Martin and the Paul Frohring Faculty Research Awards from Hiram College in 2000 and 2002, respectively.  Dr. Hall retired in the spring of 2005 with a Distinguished Service Award from Hiram College.
