Employment Interviews

Read Chapter Ten

The goals of this class session are:

  • To understand the purpose of employment interviews and how they are arranged
  • To recognize different types of interviews and learn to prepare.

The culmination of all your research, networking, resume preparation, and anxiety – you’ve been called for an interview! What to expect and how to be prepared for it is the subject of this class session.

Activites:

The textbook covers the basic types of interviews. However, there is one style of on-site interview that is so commonly used today, you need to learn about it.

Based on the concept that your past behavior is a good predictor of your future behavior, behavioral interviews require you to use interview techniques such as the S.T.A.R. format to answer the questions.

10-21.  What is STAR and how do I use it?

Go online to interview sites and find out what the S.T.A.R. technique is. What do the letters stand for and how could you implement it in an interview? Write a behavioral interview question for yourself and answer it in your Portfolio.

Interview Preparation

There are two phases of preparation for interviews -

1. Get yourself ready.

2. "Do your homework" about the employer.

Many Internet sites describe interview practices and preparation. Review the ones linked here and any others you locate and find helpful.

10-22.  "Tell me about yourself", a common interview question often used to begin the interview, is a challenge for new interviewees to answer. Is this an autobiography? How long should I talk? What is the balance between personal, interesting information and professional focus?

Fortunately, you can prepare a response in case this question or a variation is asked.

See what you can learn about this important question by reading interview sites online and prepare your response. Put this short paragraph in your Portfolio.

10-23.  Choose five other questions from the list on pg. 151 of your textbook and prepare your answers in your Portfolio.
