This course is designed to address the career and job search concerns of adults in career transition in the Weekend College. The course will begin by briefly reviewing the career development process and introducing you to several tools you can use to identify your skills and evaluate how your personality might influence your job search goals.
For those students who need to explore career alternatives, there will be some optional activities to help you generate career ideas. Finally, you will develop the materials to put your career plans into action by writing effective resumes and cover letters, learning how to identify potential employers and vacancies and preparing to market yourself well during interviews.
This is an ambitious set of goals for a one-credit workshop so we will be skimming over many topics. As a responsible adult learner, you must identify areas where you need further work, and I would be happy to meet with you individually at a mutually convenient time to work on your individual career concerns. The Career Center is open on WEC Saturdays during the academic year from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., during the workweek from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and at other times by appointment.
This course will use a textbook in adult career development:
Managing Career Transitions: Your Career as a Work in Progress, Kit Harrington Hayes, Gorsuch Scarisbrick, Publishers, 2nd edition. You can order this book from Amazon. I also have two copies in my office that you could arrange to borrow for a few weeks if necessary.
Everyone who registers for this course will need to be able to access the Hiram College Career Center website and the links associated with the class at www.hiram.edu/career/. If you experience technical problems such as a broken or missing link, please email me at craigkm@hiram.edu and we'll fix it as quickly as possible. We cannot check the course site every day so we apologize in advance if links disappear or are not working. All the links we have chosen normally have a good reputation for stability but you never know. You can access the course at the bottom of the WEC page on our website.
