Reading assignment: Kosso, Chapters 4-5

 

Please provide brief answers to the following:

 

1) Explain the two foundations of general relativity.

 

2) Give two experimentally testable predictions of the general theory of relativity.  Is the idea of a curved space-time experimentally testable?

 

3) In developing the general theory of relativity Einstein hoped to construct a theory which avoided any reference to "space" itself.  However, as it turned out, a central idea of the theory is a curved space-time.  Does this mean that the general theory of relativity supports (proves?) the substantival model of space?  How does the "hole problem" come into this discussion? 

 

4) According to Kosso do the special and general theories of relativity tell how nature "really is" or just how nature appears?
