So you are thinking about a major in the sciences or a pre-professional career? Good for you. It will be a tough road ahead, but if I know you, you're up to the challenge. Let's start with this principles of chemistry course. Chemistry is so much more than mixing A and B to get a puff of smoke. Chemistry is everywhere. It would be hard to name one aspect of your life that doesn't involve chemistry. In this course, you will learn about the very fundamental principles of chemistry; you will dive deep inside atoms to discover what makes them, how and why they bond to form molecules and how those molecules come together to give us life, materials, electronic devices, etc. But you will also gain other very valuable tools in this course. You will learn how to think critically and analytically about problems in order to find solutions. You will also be involved in projects that require team work and communication. You will draw on what you have learned and apply it to the world around you. In the laboratory, you will gain valuable hands-on skills that will allow you to put to use some of the principles and concepts we will learn about. You've got a long road ahead of you, but I think you're going to like this step. |
